In Memoriam
357th Fighter Group losses.
This list was compiled by the 357th Group historian Merle Olmsted, and was issued at the 1998 re-union in Colorado Springs. It is believed to be the full list, if this is not the case we are truly sorry.
MIA - Missing in Action.
KIA - Killed in Action.
KIT - Killed in Training.
This quotation is from Merle Olmsted. " The Eighth Air
Force was, by far, the largest air strike force ever committed to battle. It faced a
tough, well equipped, tenacious enemy who fought well after the final result was no
longer in doubt. Given these facts, the attrition rate of men and machines was very high.
Well over 4,000 heavy bombers failed to return from missions, along with over 1,200 P-51
Mustang's, the most numerous fighter airplane. Over 40,000 of the crew members were dead
or missing. Of this stagering total, the 357th percentage was relatively low, compared to
other fighter groups."
The 357th Fighter Group was blessed with a fine group of young men who had extensive
training, looked after each other, and had an exceptionally fine airplane.
The following men made the supreme sacrifice so that we could live in peace. We shall
forever be indebted to them.
